Working together and sharing knowledge has always been the best way to excel in a field and to rapidly move forward. Sweden and Brazil both have a strong focus on the Aeronautics area and by cooperating, not only can both countries gain knowledge, the field of Aeronautics can also benefit and grow regarding innovation and competence.
The mission for the cooperation is to gather researchers, industry experts and governmental agencies and bring them together, to better explore the field of Aeronautics and create technologies and innovations that can advance not only Aeronautics, but connected industry sectors and the involved actors as well.
The Aeronautics field is a strategic area for both Brazil and Sweden. By coming together in an Aeronautical Innovation Cooperation both sides make it possible to share knowledge and ideas.
Brazil has a strong industry background in civil aircrafts while Sweden has a complementary strong heritage in fighter aircrafts. These are two industry sectors that have different market requirements but to a large extent share technologies and challenges.
The cooperation is a result of the signing of the contract for the Gripen NG project. The Gripen is a fighter aircraft, produced in Sweden. Now, with the contract, Brazil will also be a manufacturer of the Gripen, primarily building the 2-seater version.
The Swedish Brazilian High Level Group on Aeronautics (HLG) was initiated in 2015, as part of the action plan for the strategic partnership between Sweden and Brazil. The HLG is led by the ministerial level and meets yearly to outline the strategic direction of the cooperation. The HLG consists of representatives from Government, Industry and Academia in both countries including:
State secretaries / Vice ministers for the respective Ministries responsible for Industry, Innovation, Defence and Foreign Affairs.
The Executive Committee consists of representatives for each member of the HLG. The task of the Executive Committee is to initiate and follow up activities decided by the HLG and to prepare the HLG meetings. This includes arranging events, monitoring of the bilateral development projects and to propose near and long-term strategic plans for the cooperation.
Cooperation in Aeronautics is initiated in areas that can benefit all involved parties and get funding through established or new funding schemes.
One aim is to arrange joint calls between funding agencies in the two countries. When a call is announced, applications are made by relevant groups from academia and industry, according to the rules for the respective call. Projects can also be initiated as direct government or industry cooperation, outside such calls.
Initially, the focus is cooperation on lower technology-readiness level (TRL) with applications in military and civil aviation as well as in other industries (triple use). The aim is to gradually grow the cooperation into more strategic issues and investment such as future Gripen versions, civil and military technology demonstrators and Future Air System. The ambition is also to promote spin-offs from the cooperation into other industries and additionally to try out the model of cooperation for possible application into other industries.
